Undergraduate
students are part of the UMEB program. UMEB is funded by the National
Science Foundation and is designed to provide fellowships to undergraduate
students at Cal State L.A. who are seeking research careers in the
environmental sciences.

| "I'm
an undergraduate student in Natural Science, and am also working towards
a teaching credential. I conduct student research in Dr. Hibb's Hygrogeology
lab, analyzing isotopes in springs and oases in the Coachella Valley.
With the experience gained through UMEB, I hope to learn about reasearch
and educational opportunities as a graduate student or science teacher."

| Rosa
joined the UMEB program in the fall of 2006. Currently, she is working
with Dr. Hibbs on a project that evaluates water quality, Se sources,
as well as possible correlation of Se with geological formations in
the McCoy creek and Dry Canyon that are tributaries to the Los Angeles
River. Rosa expects to graduate with a B.S. in Biology and plans to
pursue a graduate degree in Hydrogeology. |

| "My
research investigates genetic diversity and phylogeography of a species
of oak, Quercus engelmannii, that is endemic to Southern California.
By analysis of choloroplast microsatellites, we intend to explore
whether different populations are reproductively isolated from each
other. The data obtained from this experiment will aid in designing
conservation approaches to preserve this species. This project is
in collaboration with Dr. Victoria Sork at UCLA." --Edina Losonczi-Gorshtein |

| "My
research project is called Monitoring Carbon and Water Fluxes in Chaparral
Ecosystem. I will be graduating in July, 2008. After graduation, I
plan to take a year off and go work in the field. After that, I am
planning to go to graduate school and study Environmental Sciences."--Gerda

am analyzing the dispersal patterns of the sea slug Elysia patina
in the caribbean. I do this by sequencing the COI gene of E. patina."--Danielle
